recent hi-lites

1. almost died hiking when descending a landslide and ground gave way beneath us, sending me & buddy tumbling 15 meters down a cliff just to be caught on a tree branch over an oceanside cliff, gripping each other. v cinematic

2. had a late-nite hart-to-hart with gurl i work with. she ranted about volunteer tourism. i ranted about cycle of exploitation in restaurant culture n how im tired of pouring my sweat & blood down bougie gullets. v enlightening, relieving

3. will be cooking for the exec chef opening up drake’s new restaurant, haaa

4. doing two-week stint in japan in september/october, doing pop-up restaurants in & around tokyo to show off heirloom corn & pre-hispanic mexican cooking. lookin forward to it

i honestly think about this trailer a lot

why im on a fuckin island

i like how the world shrinks down to the island and it’s 40-odd people. i like how the time warps. i like how, by working a timed contract, you can see the edge of the horizon, the bottom of the abyss. i like the cold. i like the rocky cliffs, the moonlight reflecting off the ocean, the moss n the rotting wood. i like how everyone has a role that makes them worth transporting here. i like the respect i earned. i like the physicality of the environs, the verticality, the slipperiness, how you have to focus on getting from point a to b. i like the urgency. i like the silence. i like the camraderie. i like the places you can slip away to to be truly alone. i like being exhausted at the end of a day. i came here because its the only way i know to make enuf money to do more than scrape by. im not sure ill come back after this season. i know that during the winter in my home city i was having a hard time finding anything to like at all. i want more from this life but i don’t know how to get it without grinding out money in distant outposts like these. luckily i like being on the rim of civilization

guess who’s back on their favorite remote north pacific island

All forms of divinity are autobiographical. Not only do they come out of us, we are also mirrored in them. Divinity is introspection’s double vision revealing the life of the soul as both I and God. We see ourselves in him and he sees himself in us.

Could God carry the weight of all my deficiencies? Wouldn’t he succumb under the tremendous load of all my misfortunes?
